Writing A Personalized Children’s Book III

My writing began with writing books for my grandchildren, personalized with each one in mind. My youngest grandchildren were just 2 when I wrote their books. William’s aka Liam’s was first followed by Phoebe’s book.

Generating a Concept

Knowing that Liam would not go to sleep without his dinosaur became the basis of this book. One night Dino is not waiting for him in his usual spot so Liam begins the hunt throughout the house.

Building the Plot

In this book Liam will look for Dino throughout his house. So I answered the following questions to build the plot.

  1. Where will Liam go?

  2. What will he find?

Tying It All Together

After each place that Liam looks, the same statement is made: “but no Dino”.

The Conclusion

Poor Liam is in tears, sucking his two fingers because he can’t find Dino. Liam’s mommy moves his quilt, and who is hiding beneath, why Dino, of course. A happy Liam goes to sleep cradling Dino in his arms.

Illustrating the Story

So once the story was written, the illustrations came next. I am a Zen Doodle artist and loved making my writing come alive with my drawings.

Your Turn to Create a Story

Young children often have a favorite toy. Build an adventure about your special child and his/her special toy. Do they go on a vacation? Do they have a picnic? Do they play a special game? Let you imagination be your guide. If you don’t like to draw, take photographs and use them to illustrate your story. You can do it, give it a try.
